Our coffees are roasted weekly and fulfilled after roasting to ensure optimal freshness and flavour.  Cut-off for all orders is at 9am on Tuesday mornings.  Orders completed after this time will be shipped the following week.

We are delighted to once again bring back the beloved Mokka Natural from Granja La Esperanza.  

Producer Rigoberto Herrera of Cafe Granja La Esperanza has spent the last several years experimenting and pushing coffee innovation. At their five farms, he  has  planted  several  varieties  not  typically found in Colombia. These include some of the earliest plantings of Geisha trees in the country as well as the rare Mokka variety. 

This particular limited edition lot is entirely composed of the spectacularly small-seed variety Mokka (sometimes “Mocha”). While the cultivar is likely named for the port city in Yemen, whether or not it specifically owes its provenance to the origin of cultivated coffee trade is more difficult to determine. Its more recent history, at least in the Americas, traces its distribution through Brazil in the middle of the 20th century. While Mokka variety coffee may be found in exotic locals as far as southern Ethiopia and Tahiti, most commonly it is seen in Maui and Colombia.

 Mokka is genetically quite similar to Laurina (sometimes named “Bourbon Pointu”), the original Reunion (Bourbon) Island mutation that provides the genetic source material for most Arabica grown throughout Africa and the Americas. Like Laurina, Mokka trees have narrow leaves and tiny fruit, the coffee seeds are lower in caffeine content than standard Arabica, and have a unique flavor profile. 

The GLE Team chose to plant this variety at Hawaii, one of their five estates, and produced a beautiful example of natural process coffee with 28 days of slow, solar drying.  You'll find bold, intense flavours of tangerine, grapefruit peel, raspberry, and cacao nib.  Please enjoy!
