We are beyond excited to offer coffees again from our friends at Cafe Granja La Esperanza. For this year's crop, we have secured seven amazing and rare lots to share with you. We will be releasing them in this series, "Best of Granja La Esperanza 2018," from Autumn until Winter, and we hope you enjoy this sensory journey along with us. There are some particularly exquisite lots for which we will only take pre-orders and roast only once, so keep your eyes on this space!
Producer Rigoberto Herrera of Cafe Granja La Esperanza has spent the last several years experimenting and pushing coffee innovation. At their five farms, he has planted several varieties not typically found in Colombia. These include some of the earliest plantings of Geisha trees in the country as well as the rare Mokka variety.
Finca Hawaii is one of a small group of third-generation family-owned farms located about a two hour drive north of Cali in Colombia’s Cundinamarca department. Brothers Luis and Rigoberto Herrera have worked hard to make their farms models that exemplify the innovation and stewardship undertaken by their father, who first diversified their coffees to include Yellow and Red Bourbon, Caturra, and Typica back in 1945.
This particular limited edition lot is entirely composed of the spectacularly small-seed variety Mokka (sometimes “Mocha”). While the cultivar is likely named for the port city in Yemen, whether or not it specifically owes its provenance to the origin of cultivated coffee trade is more difficult to determine. Its more recent history, at least in the Americas, traces its distribution through Brazil in the middle of the 20th century. While Mokka variety coffee may be found in exotic locals as far as southern Ethiopia and Tahiti, most commonly it is seen in Maui and Colombia.
Mokka is genetically quite similar to Laurina (sometimes named “Bourbon Pointu”), the original Reunion (Bourbon) Island mutation that provides the genetic source material for most Arabica grown throughout Africa and the Americas. Like Laurina, Mokka trees have narrow leaves and tiny fruit, the coffee seeds are lower in caffeine content than standard Arabica, and have a unique flavor profile.
This Mokka Natural is our first release of our "2018 Best of Granja La Esperanza" series. The GLE Team chose to plant this variety at Las Margaritas, one of their five estates, and produced a beautiful example of natural process coffee with 28 days of slow, solar drying. You'll find bold, intense flavours of plum, red fruits, cacao nibs, and a winey acidity reminiscent of a lovely Shiraz. Please enjoy!
