Adam Overton started Gesha Village in 2011, with the intention to bring the storied gesha variety back to coffee's birthplace: Gesha, Ethiopia

Along with his wife, Rachel Samuel, and coffee educator, Willem Boot, Adam founded Gesha Village with a 500-hectare plot of land in Bench Maji, in close proximity to the Gori Gesha forest. 
With his first few harvests of three different gesha varieties, the potential for quality by combining the rich, fertile soil of Ethiopia with the flavour characteristics of the gesha variety already became clear.  
We are fortunate to have been one of the first to work with Adam and his team to bring this rare quality coffee to market.

Gesha Village is separated into eight different "blocks" - based on micro-climate and each planted with one of three key varieties: Gesha 1931, Gori Gesha, and Illubabor Forest.  Gesha 1931 and Gori Gesha are strains of the original gesha variety, while Illubabor Forest is a disease-resistant variety obtained from the Ethiopian research centre.

This lot, from the very challenging 2021 harvest, is from Narsha Block.  Narsha, the smallest of the Gesha Village blocks, is planted with the Gesha 1931 variety, which is made from the diverse forest population that closely resembles the Panamanian Geisha.

The Gesha 1931 variety is our favourite variety at Gesha Village, and this lot is a sparkling example of the florality and nuanced complexity that this variety has the potential for.

Coffee cherries are hand picked and sorted, then placed on 30-metre high African raised beds with bed thickness that increases as the days pass.  After the 12th or 13th day, the coffee is moved to shade drying.  The total drying time depends on the environmental conditions, and for this lot the total number of days was 32.  Even though this year's total harvest was reduced due to the rains ending earlier than normal, we're fortunate to be able to secure this special selection.  

In the cup, expect the Gesha 1931 variety to shine through its bergamot aroma and lemon candy character, with some unexpected fresh blueberry notes showcasing the natural process.  An elegant mouthfeel and a long pleasant finish.
